If you’re looking in the mirror right now and wondering whether what you see is normal, here’s what to expect.
How long does bruising last after rhinoplasty?
For most people, bruising is at its most visible in the first few days after surgery and then fades steadily. Many patients see a substantial improvement within roughly a week, and by around two weeks the remaining bruising is often light enough to be covered or barely noticeable. Some residual yellowish discolouration can linger beyond that, depending on the procedure and your own tendency to bruise.
It’s worth knowing three things from the start. First, not everyone bruises to the same extent, and some patients have very little bruising at all. Second, bruising and swelling are not the same thing. Third, subtle swelling of the nose can remain long after the visible bruising has gone. For the bigger picture of healing from week one to the final result, see our guide to the recovery time for a rhinoplasty.
What does bruising look like after rhinoplasty?
Bruising usually appears around the lower eyelids and underneath the eyes, and occasionally spreads to the upper eyelids or nearby cheeks.
As your body breaks down and reabsorbs the blood under the skin, the colour tends to change. Bruising may start out red or dark, become purple or blue, then shift towards green and yellow before it fades. Not everyone goes through every stage, but a bruise that is changing colour is generally a bruise that is healing.
Rhinoplasty bruising timeline: what to expect
Treat these stages as general guidance; your surgeon’s instructions always come first.
The first 24–48 hours
Bruising doesn’t necessarily appear at full strength straight away; it often develops gradually over the first day or two. Some swelling around the nose and eyes is also normal at this stage.
Days 2–4
This is often when bruising looks its most noticeable. It can be surprising to see it darken after you’ve left the clinic, but darker bruising during these days doesn’t mean your recovery is going backwards. It’s a normal part of the early healing process.
Around one week after rhinoplasty
By around the end of the first week, bruising generally shows clear signs of fading and the colour starts to lighten. Some visible discolouration under the eyes at this point is entirely normal.
Around two weeks after rhinoplasty
For many patients, bruising has faded enough by around two weeks to be much less noticeable in day-to-day life, and any remaining yellowish tint can often be covered with make-up. That said, nobody can promise that every patient will be completely bruise-free by a set date.
Bruising lasting longer than two weeks
Some light discolouration can persist beyond two weeks, particularly after more extensive surgery or in people who bruise easily. What matters most is the direction of travel: bruising should keep improving. If it isn’t improving, or it comes with other symptoms such as increasing pain or swelling, contact your surgical team.

Why do you get bruising under your eyes after rhinoplasty?
During rhinoplasty, the surgeon works on the tissues, cartilage and sometimes the bones of the nose. This can affect small blood vessels, allowing a little blood to collect beneath the surrounding skin. Because the skin around the eyes is some of the thinnest on the body, any discolouration shows up particularly clearly there.
Black eyes after nose surgery don’t mean that your eyes were operated on or damaged. The bruising simply settles where the skin is thinnest and most visible.
Does everyone get black eyes after rhinoplasty?
No. The amount of bruising varies a great deal from one person to the next. Some patients have very little, while others develop more noticeable bruising around both eyes. Factors that can play a part include:
- The surgical technique used.
- Whether the nasal bones need to be repositioned (known as osteotomies).
- How extensive the surgery is.
- Your natural tendency to bruise.
- Your skin and tissue characteristics.
- Certain medications or supplements, where clinically relevant.
It’s important not to read too much into the amount of bruising. Very little bruising doesn’t mean a “better” rhinoplasty was performed, and more noticeable bruising doesn’t automatically mean anything has gone wrong.
What affects how long rhinoplasty bruising lasts?
The type and extent of surgery matters: procedures that involve repositioning the nasal bones are more commonly associated with bruising around the eyes than those focused only on the tip. Your own healing, tendency to bruise, age and skin characteristics play a role too, as does how closely you follow your post-operative instructions. If you take any medication or supplements that might affect bleeding, discuss them with your surgeon before your operation rather than making changes on your own.
How can you reduce bruising after rhinoplasty?
You can’t make bruising disappear overnight, but you can help your body clear it as efficiently as possible:
- Keep your head elevated, especially when sleeping, during the early recovery period. Our article on how long you should sleep elevated after rhinoplasty explains why this helps.
- Follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions closely.
- Avoid strenuous activity, heavy lifting and bending over in the first weeks. See when you can exercise after rhinoplasty for more detail.
- Protect your nose from knocks, bumps and pressure.
- Use cold compresses only as your surgeon advises.
- Only avoid medications or supplements that can affect bleeding when your surgeon or doctor advises you to.
- Never stop a prescribed medication without speaking to the doctor who prescribed it first.
Should you use ice for bruising after rhinoplasty?
Cold therapy is often recommended in the first couple of days after surgery, as it can help with both bruising and swelling around the eyes. The way you do it matters, though. Cold compresses are usually applied gently to the cheeks and around the eyes, not pressed onto the nose itself, as any pressure on the operated nose should be avoided. Never put ice directly against your skin; wrap it in a clean cloth or use the compresses your clinic recommends.
Timing and technique vary between surgeons, so follow the specific instructions you’re given at your clinic rather than general advice online.
Is bruising or swelling worse after rhinoplasty?
They’re two different things, and they follow different timelines. Bruising is blood beneath the skin that causes visible discolouration. Swelling is fluid and the body’s inflammatory response, which makes tissues look larger or puffier.
Bruising generally resolves within the first couple of weeks, while subtle swelling of the nasal tip can take many months to settle. Our article on how long swelling lasts after rhinoplasty covers that in detail.
When can you cover rhinoplasty bruising with make-up?
Make-up should never be applied over open wounds, healing incisions or any area your surgeon has told you to keep clear. For bruising under the eyes, away from the surgical sites, many patients are able to use concealer once the early recovery period has passed, but you should check with your surgeon first. If you have an important work or social event coming up, it’s worth mentioning it at your consultation so your surgeon can help you plan your surgery date around it.
When is bruising after rhinoplasty not normal?
Normal bruising follows a clear trend: it peaks early and then steadily improves. Contact your surgical team if you notice:
- Bruising that is rapidly getting worse or looks unusual.
- Significant or increasing pain.
- Substantial swelling on one side.
- Persistent or heavy bleeding.
- Any changes in your vision.
Don’t try to diagnose yourself from the colour of a bruise alone; if something doesn’t feel right, call the clinic. For more on recognising genuine problems, see our article on whether a rhinoplasty can go wrong.
Frequently asked questions about bruising after rhinoplasty
When is bruising worst after rhinoplasty?
Bruising is usually at its most noticeable in the first few days after surgery, often around days two to four, before it starts to fade.
Can rhinoplasty bruising last a month?
Occasionally some faint discolouration can last longer than two weeks, but most visible bruising clears well before a month. If bruising is persisting or isn’t improving, speak to your surgeon.
Why do you get black eyes after rhinoplasty?
Surgery on the nose can affect small blood vessels, and the blood that collects beneath the skin shows most clearly around the eyes, where the skin is thinnest.
Can you have rhinoplasty without bruising?
Some patients develop very little visible bruising, but nobody can guarantee a bruise-free recovery.
Does more bruising mean something went wrong?
Not on its own. The amount of bruising varies from person to person. What matters more is whether it’s improving and whether you have any other symptoms.
Does bruising affect your final rhinoplasty result?
No. Ordinary post-operative bruising is temporary and doesn’t determine your final result.
